New Mix up On Future Breaks FM

I was over at the Future Breaks FM studio last weekend. I think it's the fourth time I've played in the last two months. It's nice to get back into the swing of things. Certainly helps get the creative juices flowing. Maybe I'll finally get around to mastering some of these tunes I've been working on.

Katrina was predicted a year in advance

The Louisiana bayou, hardest working marsh in America, is in big trouble—with dire consequences for residents, the nearby city of New Orleans, and seafood lovers everywhere.

"Nothing surprising there: Hurricanes in August are as much a part of life in this town as hangovers on Ash Wednesday. But the next day the storm gathered steam and drew a bead on the city. As the whirling maelstrom approached the coast, more than a million people evacuated to higher ground. Some 200,000 remained, however—the car-less, the homeless, the aged and infirm, and those die-hard New Orleanians who look for any excuse to throw a party. The storm hit Breton Sound with the fury of a nuclear warhead, pushing a deadly storm surge into Lake Pontchartrain. The water crept to the top of the massive berm that holds back the lake and then spilled over. Nearly 80 percent of New Orleans lies below sea level—more than eight feet below in places—so the water poured in. A liquid brown wall washed over the brick ranch homes of Gentilly, over the clapboard houses of the Ninth Ward, over the white-columned porches of the Garden District, until it raced through the bars and strip joints on Bourbon Street like the pale rider of the Apocalypse. As it reached 25 feet (eight meters) over parts of the city, people climbed onto roofs to escape it. Thousands drowned in the murky brew that was soon contaminated by sewage and industrial waste. Thousands more who survived the flood later perished from dehydration and disease as they waited to be rescued. It took two months to pump the city dry, and by then the Big Easy was buried under a blanket of putrid sediment, a million people were homeless, and 50,000 were dead. It was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. When did this calamity happen? It hasn't—yet. But the doomsday scenario is not far-fetched."

Head2Toe

I've finally collected all 13 Head2Toe 12's. It's one of my favorite labels of all time. So many great brazilian and not so brazilian bruk tunes. I guess my favorite is probably Alex Phountzi's remix of Banda Favela's Samba 2150 (Toe006) based on the amount it gets played. Also a big fan of Stockholm Cyclo's Music is All This (Toe008). And of course, Nubian Mindz' Good Vibes (Toe004) is a true classic. There is some absolutely mental brazilian howling on Opaque's remix of Lake of Perseverance (Toe001). More info on Head2Toe here:

Skream

I'm really feeling this Skream Mix. It seems that the dubstep sound is morphing more and more into actual Dub. I must say I miss the faster beats, but it's growing on me more and more with every listen. Interesting read about the early days of dubstep/grime. Crazy to think that these cats are the children of the junglist massive. And what most of us wouldn't give for that 'Wall of '89-96 dubplates never been played'.

Double Identity - Can't Explain - Hot new Broken Beat out of San Francisco

Just picked up this new 12" from the one like Double Identity (aka Dub ID, aka Tomas of XLR8R) on his own imprint: Voltage. I've enjoyed everything on the label thus far so it's no surprise how great this record is. There's a quirky detroit broken remix by Titonton as well. So good to see some high quality choonage coming out of the bay. Keep up the good work!

Forward Ever

I jus wanna say...

Well, given my copious amounts of free time at work these days combined with an inherent addiction to all things web, I decided it was time to start bloggin'. Theres a guy in my building who has 'bloggin' as his license plate. Now that is hardcore.
